Partial vs full overlay cabinets11/21/2023 ![]() The ideal gap around inlay doors is between 3/32” – ⅛” between the door and the frame, which requires a lot of precision and skill to make. Generally inlay doors are seen most on cabinets with face frames, but they can also be used with frameless cabinets. Inlay doors and drawers sit inside of the cabinet base and are flush with the front of the cabinet base or face frame. Inlay doors are more difficult from the get go and also require more maintenance over time. ![]() So which is better? In general, I would say that overlay doors are better because they require less tinkering with. Overlay doors on the other hand sit in front of the cabinet base or face frame. With inset cabinet doors, the outside of the doors are flush with the front of the cabinet. The difference between inset and overlay cabinets is where the doors are placed.
